The name mahjongg refers to the hemp-sparrow which is portrayed on the "bamboo one" tile. Tiles must be melded and removed from the field of play one after the other. In classical mahjong you play with a total of 136 or 144 tiles. There are three suits of coloured tiles - namely bamboo, characters and circles. Each suit has tiles numbered from one to nine, each one four times. There are also the so called trump tiles, made up of the four winds and three dragons. There are also four each of the trump tiles. Optionally, the skillfully shaped main tiles may be included. These consist of four flowers and the four seasons of which there is only one each. In American mahjongg there are also eight jokers.
